   Chandrayan [26/10 07:08PM]

For those harping on the wasteful expenditure of lunar mission, the price tag is only Rs. 386 crore to reach to the moon.

A rough calculation shows the amount spent on Chandrayaan-1 is not even one-tenth of the Indian Premier League rights bagged by a private channel.

The expenses spread over three years are even less than four percent of the annual budget of ISRO.

The more endearing fact is that our scientists achieved this by optimising the tests that's an indicator of their efficiency.

About 1000 scientists toiled for three years, a similar effort by NASA would have cost five times more.

As ISRO Chairman Madahavan Nair puts it there were tests the Americans would have done six times and our scientists did only thrice saving a great chunk of money.

In the days of corruption prevailing everywhere and with people looking for means and ways to make up the account books inflating expenditure to fatten their purses, here are the scientist who made us proud through their honesty if not the space voyage.

Kudos to them.

True
I read your thoughts on Chandrayaan I and I complitly agree with you. As you know I used to do ISRO, as one of my beats. People in ISRO used to tell me stories about brain drain in ISRO. How top brains of ISRO are quitting the organization and joining NASA and European space agencies. This is before Chandrayaan. After Chandrayaan I met M. Annadurai, who is project director Chandrayaan, he told me about reverse brain drain. People, who left ISRO to join NASA and European space agencies, now want to come back. Not only them, American scientists who work in NASA are contacting Annaduri for openings in ISRO. This magic happened not only because of Chandrayaan and also future voyages which ISRO is now eyeing and I think that is a greatest thing which has happened to India recently.

One or the other day dependence on western and european in the field of science and technology had to end... and day by day we are closer to that. Resultant insecurity is obvious in the responses by US, UK and the like. That's the achievement, and shows us the way forward.
