I got this mail in response to my earlier blog post (The hidden Gandhi):
It is a shame that politicians of all hues are consigning Gandhiji to the scrap heap of history!
It is because these venal politicians, steeped in corruption, greed and self interest, cannot stomach the high ideals Gandhiji set for himself and his colleagues.
Gandhiji staring down disapprovingly at them from his photos is an anathema to their warped thinking and behaviour. It disturbs them greatly as it holds a mirror to their ugly faces.
All right-thinking Indians have a special place in their heart for this great soul. How great he was can be judged from the international respect he gets even now.
He was an icon for people like Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Einstein, Huxley, etc. Hope India throws up some future leaders who would appreciate the greatness of Gandhiji and emulate his life of “simple living and high thinking.” Dilip Mahanty Fiji Trade Consulate Sydney, Australia dilipm@hotkey.net.au
