Supermom or a bad mother? That’s what feminists are debating as Rachida Dati, the French Justice Minister, returned to work only five days after giving birth to a girl by C-Section. May be in supersoft America, nannies mollycoddle new mothers. In India, women regularly get back to heavy household chores within days of C-Secs. Sitting up with a baby all night, feeding it after every two hours, bathing it, changing nappies 24X7 is no luxury. This lady just dressed up for it. What is most worrying is the professional effect of this act: Citing her example, global corporate managements (comprising both men and women) may try to curtail maternity leave for those women who need it. And may be competitive male colleagues (this is more serious), who would earlier use the break-in-work to further their own careers, are feeling threatened. Do we question when a man returns to work after a serious illness before his doctor declares him fit because his career is in jeopardy? It’s her life, her kid, her body and her job, a job she fought all odds to get. Let her decide!

After birth care for women
The time needed by a woman to get back to normal life after child birth varies from woman to woman. In the book "The Good Earth" by Pearl S. Buck, the Chinese woman working to feed her family, has a baby in the field, cuts the umbilical cord herself, suckles the baby, and after less than an hour starts to work harvesting the crop. This is an extreme case. I do not think any criticism is due in the case of Ms. Dati.
