Just as terrorists were on a shooting spree at CST, two young Muslim executives from Delhi were on their way to Mumbai in the Rajdhani Express. They got frantic phone calls from friends about the Mumbai mayhem and alighted at Borivali. “Be careful,” their boss warned. And they were scared. Their fault: They were young Muslim professionals and one of them was from Srinagar and spoke with a distinct Kashmiri accent. They didn’t even unpack their bags, planning to catch the next train home. But the police caught up with them earlier. Within hours, they were summoned to the nearest police station and asked to prove they “were not terrorists.” Passport, company letters and ID cards were disregarded as they were grilled for hours. They were let off only to have the police knock at their hotel door within hours. In the next 24 hours, they had to prove their “innocence” five times. The hotel manager got suspicious and in no uncertain terms, asked them to check out. They somehow reached the station and caught a train back. Back in Delhi, they refuse to reveal what happened in those hours. But one question says it all. “Aren’t we Indians too? Are all Muslims terrorists?” Who is to blame?
